Rajkumar Biography

Singanalluru Puttaswamayya Muthuraju  is a real name of RAJKUMAR, but onstage he well known as name of Rajkumar. Rajkumar was born on 24 April 1929  24 April 1929 Gajanur, Madras Presidency, British India. He married a 14-year-old Parvathamma Gowda, his cousin, on 25 June 1953 in Nanjangud. They had five children; Three sons Shiva, Raghavendra and Puneeth, and Two daughters Lakshmi and Poornima. He moved to Bangalore in 1972, after he began getting multiple film offers.

Rajkumar was 8 when he started his career with his father in the Gubbi Drama Company. Rajkumar, is fondly remembered as Nata Saarvabhouma (Emperor of Actors), Bangarada Manushya (Man of Gold), Vara Nata (Gifted Actor) and Rajanna (Brother Raj) amid the Kannada community and remains an iconic superstar from his time. 

He started his film career in 1954 in the film Bedara Kannapa and went on to star in over 220 movies, his last being Shabdavedhi in 2000. Some of his best works include Ranadheera Kanteerava, Sampathige Saval, Kaviratna Kalidasa, Jedara Bale and Gowri, among others.

Popular Bollywood actress Rekha also made her debut with him in the film Operation Jackpotnalli CID 999. He is also the first Indian actor to have worked in the Indian rendition of popular  James Bond in Jedara Bale. 

In 2000, he was in the news after the actor was kidnapped by notorious dacoit Veerappan from his farm house at Gajanur, Karnataka. He was released after 108 days.

This legendary actor is a recipient of the Padma Bhushan (in 1983) and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (in 1995) for the lifetime contribution to Indian Cinema.

1992 – Best Male Playback Singer for the song "Naadamaya Ee Lokavella" from the movie Jeevana Chaitra

2002 – NTR National Award
To commemorate his 88th birth anniversary on Monday, Google honoured late Kannada superstar and singer Rajkumar with a special doodle which features the veteran actor staring at audiences from a movie screen.

Rajkumar died at his home in Sadashivanagar, Bengaluru on 12 April 2006 following a cardiac arrest, while after his death his eyes were donated. The government then announced for its intention to make a memorial to Rajkumar at Kanteerava Studios at the cost ₹ 100  million.
